2006 Show Comments for Spectators and Photographers
Lone Star - Good show with pretty good sunfield for photos. Primarily WWII aircraft with local aerobatic performers and a couple of military flybys.
Langley - Excellent military show with great sunfield. Excellent for photos. Good civilian performers. Not many WWII aircraft.
Barksdale - Excellent military show with very good sunfield. Features local B-52s. Great bomber heritage flight. Name aerobatics performers.
Ft. Worth NAS-JRB. Very good show with excellent demo of reserve airpower. Terrible sunfield and distracting background.
Chino Planes of Fame- King of the WWII fighter shows. One of my favorites. Pretty good sunfield. Very little modern military or aerobatic.
Addison - More of an open house for Cavanaugh Museum. Planes flown in an active traffic pattern - not much photo opportunity but great museum.
Reading - Good show but parking is terrible. Pretty good sunfield. Main show is the WWII reenactors with interesting ground equipment.
Geneseo - One of my favorites. Only show on grass in a picturesque setting. Great sunfield. Crowd line close to vintage aircraft flying.
Oceana - Very popular with photographers. Great Navy show of equipment. One of the best shows for spectators and photographers.
Ft. Worth Alliance - Should be combined with the NAS-JRB show and it would be great. Sunfield is only fair. Few name performers or equipment.
Edwards AFB - Excellent show with unusual research planes on display. Good sunfield. Only place to see a U-2 fly. Worth the drive from LAX.
Pensacola - Great sunfield and background. Well done show. Excellent support by USAF and aerobatics. Naval Air Museum. No WWII aircraft. |
Fred's Photo Equipment
Camera - Canon EOS1D-Mark IIn. After years of using Nikon equipment I switched to Canon after a major theft at a show in 2005. Chose Canon because it seems to have a slightly better autofocus system for action photography. Equivalent Nikon equipment is almost a toss up. Camera is heavy. I am very pleased with the results following the change of equipment.
Nikon D70s available as backup. Frequently use this camera with a zoom 28-35mm f2.8 wide angle lens for ground shots. I no longer shoot anything but digital. I normally use 4 GB compact flash cards and shoot everything in a RAW format. Process all pictures in Photoshop CS2 including web format.
Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens. Seems to be standard lens for air show photographers. Image stabilization works well - marginally faster autofocul than equivalent Nikon which I also use. Lens works well with the Canon 1.3x Multiplier which gives 540mm capability. Shooting a burst of 3-5 pictures will produce at least a couple of the very sharp pictures desired.
Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens. General use lens for ground shots. This is a great lens for general photographic use including both landscapes and portraits.
